If the employer's mail for the vacancy is created on a free domain like gmail, does this mean the vacancy is "fake"?

Fortunately, not always. But this may mean that the company is "small" with small profits. Let's analyze the options when a vacancy is created with the indication of personal mail (or mail on a free service).

1. "Small company"  —  it is about IE, with a relatively small turnover and also a small number of employees, it is quite natural that such a company has a moment of savings. Including the setting up of corporate internal infrastructure. After all, the money is not so much the mail itself and the domain. It is also necessary to hire at least a system administrator, who will configure everything correctly. And this is not a bad thing. It is quite rational, if "you" have a small turnover to save on this part.

By the way, this approach does not always mean that you will save money there. As it already concerns the mentality of the manager. Perhaps, he will, on the contrary, bet on his employees and "give less" on IT infrastructure. Why not, if the sphere allows it and this approach does not harm the business. And most importantly, it will only benefit you and may be a pleasant job in a small company.

2. Startups  —  a lot of people use such services. Since a startup always has a moment of savings at the initial stage. Finances received from investors are hard to save and spend them on a corporate domain "just to be cool" is certainly not appropriate. There is also a catch on the free domain can not be found. Simply because the attitude of the startup manager (and the ability to manage and allocate the received resources) is much more important for his success, and for you, as a future employee.

And here you may encounter both a medium or large company (if corporate restrictions do not regulate the use of personal mail) and a small one. And the main thing is that it does not lead to a "bad" vacancy, just a person is comfortable to use gmail, not a long abandoned one.

4. Ignorance and specificity of the sphere  —  despite the crazy technological breakthrough of recent years, smartphones, tablets and corporate automation, still a sufficient number of companies live "in the past century". Or at least simply does not know "how" to do business in the digital environment. This may also be due to the fact that the scope of the company itself does not set great requirements for the implementation of technological solutions. The result is good profits, good salaries, excellent conditions for employees and a completely "sad" approach to IT technologies. Then free mail could be chosen simply as a simple and clear solution, rather than symbolizing something else.

Summing up - we all meet "by dress", but at the same time we forget that it is not always correct and does not always reflect the essence. Therefore, a free domain is more of an indicator of either personal preference (and convenience in correspondence), or ignorance than a "disturbing bell" that can not work with the company.

The second point is that companies that provide such domains are very tightly controlled to ensure that their service is not used by fraudsters, which means that the percentage of risk here, strange as it may seem, decreases (even considering that even such major business players as Google are not able to "block everything").

But there is also an argument in favor of your assumption. Technology nowadays is so common that to create a "pseudo-company" even without legal face. on the Internet, and write with free mail is certainly easy and there are such cases too. But this is rather an exception than a rule.

Finally, I can give advice on how to properly analyze a vacancy, what to pay attention to in order to understand if it suits you, and minimize the risks:

  1. Pay attention to the information about the company, which is provided in the vacancy. If it is an "honest player" you can easily see what exactly the company does, visit its website, and in some cases, even see a legal face, which to some extent gives reason to trust. If the mail is "free" in this situation, there may be many reasons, and they are most likely included in the list above. And most importantly, they do not necessarily lead to a bad experience.
  2. If there is an approximate salary in the vacancy, it is average or low in the market, and the contacts on the free domain - everything is fine. It is most likely a small company, which is not "spent" on IT infrastructure. And if you are satisfied with the "price tag", why not try it.
  3. If a company has a huge "gap" in description, contacts and salary, it is certainly an alarming bell. For example, it is written that the company is "transcontinental", or you are promised "huge growth prospects" or something else that is inherent to large companies, and not only the domain of mail on a free service, but also the salary: a) or not specified ("according to the results of the interview"), b) or declared very low in the market - this is certainly an alarming bell. And even the matter is not that it is "fake" (although this percentage is already quite high), but the fact that the HR, or employee who writes a job, does not know how to properly attract the attention of the applicant. This means that such a wrong approach (in a sense, "deception" or at least disoriented of the future specialist) leads to the chance that he too will be wrong in the workplace. The result is not the best professional experience in your career.
  4. Pay attention to the job description and the subsequent dialogue. If nothing is clear, there are no "lengthy", clear descriptions - again, there is trouble or misunderstanding of your potential employer (and this leads to the results described in paragraph 2), or fraud, as the first sign of the latter is to "brainwash" you with lengthy descriptions to make you participate in the scheme. And in this situation you will certainly not get any specifics.
  5. And the real indicator of a "fake" company (and fraud) is the offer, immediately after the answer, to pay whatever you want to continue the dialogue and participate in the selection. This is a well-known fraudulent approach, and it leads to nothing but financial losses for you. In such a situation - run away from such "grief of the employer".
